More than nine centuries after the Norman Conquest of England, its effects can still be traced through British society, law, language, government, and culture. William of Normandy’s victory in 1066 was only the beginning of a much longer transformation as Norman rulers and their successors reshaped England and extended their influence across the British Isles.
In this online talk from The National Archives, medieval records specialist Paul Dryburgh looks beyond the Battle of Hastings to explore the century that followed. Using surviving archival sources, the presentation examines how conquest affected society, law, language, culture, and political power, while also setting the stage for prolonged conflict along the borders of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
The talk is part of the National Archives series The Normans: Conquest, Conflict and Colonisation and will be streamed live online through Vimeo. Registration is free with an optional pay-what-you-can contribution, and the recording is expected to remain available for 48 hours after the live event.
