Spooky Adult Book Group • Mystery

Slasher horror, survival, dark humor, and the scars left after violence collide in October’s unsettling selection.

Join fellow readers at the Fair Oaks Library for the October Spooky Adult Book Group discussion of The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix .

Hendrix puts a sharp, darkly funny spin on the classic slasher-movie “final girl” by imagining what happens long after the credits roll. Lynnette Tarkington survived a massacre years ago and has spent more than a decade meeting with five other survivors and their therapist, each trying in her own way to live with what happened.

When one member of the group misses a meeting, the women begin to suspect that someone knows who they are and may be targeting them again. The story mixes horror, suspense, trauma, survival, friendship, and the legacy of violence with plenty of references to familiar slasher-film conventions. New participants are welcome, whether you are a longtime horror reader or simply looking for a smart, unsettling book to discuss with other readers.

🌅 Why Join

▫️ Enjoy lively mystery discussions
▫️ Explore a variety of books
▫️ Share ideas and favorite passages
▫️ Meet thoughtful readers locally
▫️ Welcoming group for new members

🚶‍♀️ What to Expect

▫️ Friendly one-hour discussion session
▫️ Monthly mystery book selection
▫️ Hosted at Fair Oaks Library
▫️ Casual conversation and insights
▫️ October Author: Grady Hendrix

Copies of the next month’s title will be available at the meeting and in the library, ask at the front desk.

About SMS Tap to expand

Single Mom Strong

Single Mom Strong is a Sacramento-based nonprofit that stands beside single mothers and their children with practical support and a welcoming community. Their belief is simple and powerful: with the right tools and encouragement, families can thrive.

What started as a local effort has grown into a village—one that offers care for children, confidence for moms, and connection for both. Programs are designed to be accessible, respectful, and results-oriented, meeting families where they are and helping them take the next step forward.

What they provide

  • Quality early learning and childcare with the EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare, making dependable care attainable for single-income households.
  • Career advancement support—from resume coaching and mock interviews to a free Career Clothing Closet—so moms can pursue opportunity with confidence.
  • Community and belonging through empowerment workshops, “Mom & Me” outings, and supportive gatherings that reduce isolation and build durable networks.
  • Enrichment for kids—tutoring, camps, and hands-on learning partnerships—because a child’s growth is central to a family’s future.
The impact is tangible: moms feel seen and prepared; children feel safe and inspired; families gain steady footing. It’s practical help wrapped in kindness—exactly what many of our neighbors need.

Program Spotlight:
Men's Mentoring Team

Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

We are looking for a few good men! Are you interested in making a positive impact on a child's life? (Or do you know someone who is?) EMAIL US to learn more , or check out this CBS13 NEWS SEGMENT featuring this program!

"Being a mentor in this community has led me through a remarkable collection of moments: small, powerful, unforgettable experiences that pull me back every year...I came in hoping to help kids grow. What I didn’t expect was how much they would help me grow, too. " -Francisco Rojas, Member. Men's Mentoring Team

⚔️ Beyond 1066 — The Norman Conquest and Its Lasting Legacy

Explore what happened after the Norman Conquest as historian Paul Dryburgh looks beyond the Battle of Hastings to the political, social, and cultural changes that reshaped medieval England.

More than nine centuries after the Norman Conquest of England, its effects can still be traced through British society, law, language, government, and culture. William of Normandy’s victory in 1066 was only the beginning of a much longer transformation as Norman rulers and their successors reshaped England and extended their influence across the British Isles.

In this online talk from The National Archives, medieval records specialist Paul Dryburgh looks beyond the Battle of Hastings to explore the century that followed. Using surviving archival sources, the presentation examines how conquest affected society, law, language, culture, and political power, while also setting the stage for prolonged conflict along the borders of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.

The talk is part of the National Archives series The Normans: Conquest, Conflict and Colonisation and will be streamed live online through Vimeo. Registration is free with an optional pay-what-you-can contribution, and the recording is expected to remain available for 48 hours after the live event.

Citrus Heights HART Logo

About the Work of Citrus Heights HART

Mission: Citrus Heights HART provides resources that enable at-risk people and individuals experiencing homelessness in Citrus Heights and adjacent areas to become independent, self-sustaining, and participating members of the community. The organization serves the homeless of Citrus Heights by helping locals develop stable living situations through connections to needed resources, such as a homeless navigator or winter shelter.

Vision: To end homelessness in local communities, including Citrus Heights, by maximizing citizens' bargaining power and flexibility through formalized yet open-ended groups that address the complex problem of homelessness.

History: Citrus Heights HART is one of three HART organizations in outlying areas of Sacramento County, alongside those in Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova. Each formed in response to the lack of decentralized access to homeless services. Many founding members began at soup kitchens or food banks. After learning from homeless individuals about service access difficulties, community members brainstormed solutions. The formalized yet open-ended group structure was chosen for its legitimacy and creativity in tackling homelessness.

Core Values:

  • Volunteer Generosity: Reliance on volunteer generosity to donate time and resources towards ending homelessness.
  • Community Partnerships: Partnership with local churches, government agencies, nonprofits, businesses, schools, faith communities, and city government to provide services and support for breaking the cycle of poverty.
  • Resource Connection: Focus on connecting homeless individuals with available resources and shedding light on underlying factors affecting poverty.
  • Education and Awareness: Emphasis on education through events about available services.

Leadership: Citrus Heights HART is led by a dedicated volunteer board including:

  • Irene Hronicek: Board Chair, Winter Sanctuary & Rental Assistance Committee Chair (Holy Family Church)
  • Kathilynn Carpenter: Treasurer, Spaghetti Fest & Rental Assistance Committee (Sunrise MarketPlace PBID)
  • Margaret Cleek: Secretary (Citrus Heights Resident)
  • Diane Ebbitt: Spaghetti Feed Committee (Citrus Heights Resident)
  • Denise Hinkson: Winter Sanctuary Committee (Starbucks)
  • Katherine McBride: Volunteer
  • Marcy Phipps: Rental Assistance Committee (Dignity Health)
  • Mike Nishimura: Rental Assistance Committee (Volunteer)
  • Auriel Taurone: PRIDE Industries
  • Wouter Boudrez: Laundry Love

Inclusivity: Citrus Heights HART serves people who may be sleeping on the streets, in cars, or couch surfing, regardless of how long they've been homeless—from a week to ten years. It focuses on locals in Citrus Heights and adjacent areas, partnering with diverse community members from business, schools, faith communities, and government to support those breaking the cycle of poverty.

Key Programs: Winter Sanctuary, Veteran's Standdown, Homeless Navigator (connecting individuals with resources), Housing Programs, Spaghetti Fest, Rental Assistance, and educational events to highlight poverty factors.

Citrus Heights HART is a volunteer-run organization united with sister groups in Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova under hartstogether.org.

Rather than painting directly from scratch, participants work from a pet image and build the design step by step on glass. The finished artwork is framed and ready to hang, making the workshop both a creative experience and a chance to leave with a personalized keepsake.

The workshop is hosted at The Crafted Canvas in Fair Oaks, a local art studio offering classes, workshops, and community creative events. Supplies are included unless otherwise noted, so participants can focus on the painting and enjoy the process.

🎨 What You’ll Create

▫️ A custom portrait of your pet
▫️ Painted directly on glass
▫️ Guided trace, paint & flip technique
▫️ Personalized colors and details
▫️ Framed finished artwork
▫️ Ready to display at home

🖌️ Workshop Details

▫️ Instructor: Paint & Party Co.
▫️ Hosted at The Crafted Canvas
▫️ Fair Oaks studio setting
▫️ Supplies included unless noted
▫️ Guided, hands-on format
▫️ Advance reservation recommended

Turn a favorite pet photo into framed glass art.

Good to Know: The Crafted Canvas notes that workshops are pre-booked with limited seating, and supplies are included unless otherwise specified. Reserving ahead is the best way to secure a spot.

🐾 How It Works: Participants use a pet image as the starting point, trace the design onto glass, add color and detail, then flip the finished piece for a clean presentation. The result is a personalized pet portrait framed and ready to hang.
