Big Day of Service Tap to expand
Big Day of Service is a large-scale, volunteer-driven community service event held annually in cities and regions across the United States. The event brings together residents, nonprofits, faith organizations, schools, businesses, and local leaders to complete meaningful service projects that strengthen neighborhoods and support those in need.
Each local Big Day of Service is organized independently, allowing communities to focus on the causes that matter most to them — from neighborhood cleanups and food distribution to school support, senior assistance, beautification projects, and nonprofit capacity building.
Beyond a single day of volunteering, Big Day of Service emphasizes long-term community impact by encouraging collaboration, leadership development, and ongoing civic engagement. Many volunteers return year after year, taking on roles as project leaders, coordinators, and media or outreach team members.
Participation is open to individuals, families, youth groups, businesses, and organizations of all sizes — making it an accessible and powerful way for neighbors to connect, serve locally, and help build stronger, more connected communities.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.

The kids we’ve grown with over the past 8 years are becoming teens. Continuing to nurture our community is important to us, and we also recognize that there aren’t enough safe, structured spaces for teens to connect and just be: so we’re building one.
SMS Teen, in partnership with the City of Sacramento's SacTown Youth Nights, is coming soon.
This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.
We’ve seen what’s possible when young people have structure and trusted relationships through programs like EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare and our Men's Mentoring Team. Now we’re extending that foundation into the teen years. STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!

Program Spotlight:
Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.
We are looking for a few good men! Are you interested in making a positive impact on a child's life? (Or do you know someone who is?) EMAIL US to learn more , or check out this CBS13 NEWS SEGMENT featuring this program!
"Being a mentor in this community has led me through a remarkable collection of moments: small, powerful, unforgettable experiences that pull me back every year...I came in hoping to help kids grow. What they provide
- Quality early learning and childcare with the EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare, making dependable care attainable for single-income households.
- Career advancement support—from resume coaching and mock interviews to a free Career Clothing Closet—so moms can pursue opportunity with confidence.
- Community and belonging through empowerment workshops, “Mom & Me” outings, and supportive gatherings that reduce isolation and build durable networks.
- Enrichment for kids—tutoring, camps, and hands-on learning partnerships—because a child’s growth is central to a family’s future.

Easy • Allow 1.5–2 hours with photo stops. Surfaces range from packed dirt to river rock; wear sturdy shoes.
🚗 Parking & Facilities
American River Parkway day-use fee (paid kiosk / self-pay). Sites here include restrooms, picnic spots, boat ramp (small craft), and equestrian staging areas.
👀 What to look for
- Gravel bars & side channels—great for waterfowl and reflections.
- Blue & valley oaks, willow/cottonwood stands along the riparian edge.
- Fall salmon activity (often Oct–Dec) between River Bend and Sailor Bar; watch respectfully from shore.
- Historic dredge tailings—rounded cobble mounds from early mining.
🏺 A short history of Sailor Bar
The American River has supported people for thousands of years, including Nisenan (Southern Maidu) communities along its fertile floodplain. During the Gold Rush and into the early 20th century, Sailor Bar and nearby Sacramento Bar were heavily mined—first by hand, then by massive bucket dredges. Local lore says the name comes from sailors who left their ships to try their luck here. The rounded rock “tailings” you see today are the landscape’s living record of that era.
⚠️ River safety & etiquette
- Stay off unstable banks; river levels and currents change quickly.
- Yield to horses & give anglers space; pack out all trash.
- Dogs on leash where posted; watch for goathead thorns on gravel.
- Check current county park rules and CDFW regulations if fishing.
🌤️ Best times
Year-round; spring wildflowers & green hills, summer river breezes (go early), fall color & salmon activity, crisp winter birding.
🧭 Navigation tip
From the main lot, head toward the river and follow the service road east or west along the bank; spur paths lead to gravel bars and overlooks.
Tip: River cobbles can be slick—choose treaded shoes. After big storms, expect debris and re-routed side channels.
