A community golf fundraiser supporting local youth programs
The 3rd Annual CH PAL Golf Tournament returns this fall for another exciting day on the course in support of youth programs and community engagement throughout Citrus Heights. After an incredible turnout last year, organizers are looking forward to making this year’s event even bigger and better for golfers, sponsors, and supporters alike.
Hosted by the Citrus Heights Police Activities League, the tournament brings together community members, local partners, and golf enthusiasts for a day that blends friendly competition, connection, and giving back. Registration details and early sign-ups will be announced later this summer, with the official registration link shared as soon as it becomes available. Last year’s tournament nearly sold out — and the goal this year is to fill the course once again while continuing to support programs that make a real impact in the community.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.
We’ve seen what’s possible when young people have structure and trusted relationships through programs like EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare and our Men's Mentoring Team. Now we’re extending that foundation into the teen years. STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!

Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.
Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.

This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.

Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

A scenic, mostly flat riverside walk through oak woodland, gravel bars, and historic gold-mining tailings—perfect for easy mileage, birding, and river views.

• Easy access and mellow grades make it great for all levels, sunrise to golden hour.

Sailor Bar Access, off Illinois Ave (Fair Oaks). Multiple dirt/gravel spurs along the river; your event route (~4–5 miles) stays mostly level on service roads and riverside paths.

🏺 A short history of Sailor Bar
The American River has supported people for thousands of years, including Nisenan (Southern Maidu) communities along its fertile floodplain. During the Gold Rush and into the early 20th century, Sailor Bar and nearby Sacramento Bar were heavily mined—first by hand, then by massive bucket dredges. Local lore says the name comes from sailors who left their ships to try their luck here. The rounded rock “tailings” you see today are the landscape’s living record of that era.

About the Work of Citrus Heights HART
Mission: Citrus Heights HART provides resources that enable at-risk people and individuals experiencing homelessness in Citrus Heights and adjacent areas to become independent, self-sustaining, and participating members of the community. The organization serves the homeless of Citrus Heights by helping locals develop stable living situations through connections to needed resources, such as a homeless navigator or winter shelter.
Vision: To end homelessness in local communities, including Citrus Heights, by maximizing citizens' bargaining power and flexibility through formalized yet open-ended groups that address the complex problem of homelessness.
History: Citrus Heights HART is one of three HART organizations in outlying areas of Sacramento County, alongside those in Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova. Each formed in response to the lack of decentralized access to homeless services. Many founding members began at soup kitchens or food banks. After learning from homeless individuals about service access difficulties, community members brainstormed solutions. The formalized yet open-ended group structure was chosen for its legitimacy and creativity in tackling homelessness.

The kids we’ve grown with over the past 8 years are becoming teens. Continuing to nurture our community is important to us, and we also recognize that there aren’t enough safe, structured spaces for teens to connect and just be: so we’re building one.
SMS Teen, in partnership with the City of Sacramento's SacTown Youth Nights, is coming soon.
This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.
We’ve seen what’s possible when young people have structure and trusted relationships through programs like EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare and our Men's Mentoring Team. Now we’re extending that foundation into the teen years. STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!

Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

Free drop-in STEAM event for kids ages 6–12 will be held at Southgate Library, featuring hands-on STEAM activities and creative projects with educational materials provided (while supplies last).
Young creators and curious minds are invited to explore the exciting world of STEAM through hands-on activities, creative experiments, and interactive projects designed to inspire learning and imagination. Serving South Sacramento with welcoming spaces and practical resources, Southgate Library is a neighborhood hub for reading, technology access, community learning, and family-friendly programs. It’s also home to the system’s largest Vietnamese language collection, supporting one of the area’s most vibrant multilingual communities.
A Quick Bit of History
Before an official branch existed, local residents relied on a small contract station on 44th Street. South Sacramento’s first official library opened on April 1, 1952, at 6225 Franklin Boulevard with 3,000 books in a modest shared space. In 1962, it moved into the Southgate Shopping Center on Florin Road and became known as Southgate Library. With federal funding secured, the current 12,000 sq ft building opened at 6132 66th Avenue in August 1975, designed by architect Alan Oshima. Renovations in 2000 and 2011 refreshed public spaces and revitalized the children’s area—making 2025 a proud milestone: 50 years of connection, learning, and community.
