The kids we’ve grown with over the past 8 years are becoming teens. Continuing to nurture our community is important to us, and we also recognize that there aren’t enough safe, structured spaces for teens to connect and just be: so we’re building one.
SMS Teen, in partnership with the City of Sacramento's SacTown Youth Nights, is coming soon.
This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.
We’ve seen what’s possible when young people have structure and trusted relationships through programs like EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare and our Men's Mentoring Team. Now we’re extending that foundation into the teen years. STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!

Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

A Quick Bit of History
Before an official branch existed, local residents relied on a small contract station on 44th Street. South Sacramento’s first official library opened on April 1, 1952, at 6225 Franklin Boulevard with 3,000 books in a modest shared space. In 1962, it moved into the Southgate Shopping Center on Florin Road and became known as Southgate Library. With federal funding secured, the current 12,000 sq ft building opened at 6132 66th Avenue in August 1975, designed by architect Alan Oshima. Renovations in 2000 and 2011 refreshed public spaces and revitalized the children’s area—making 2025 a proud milestone: 50 years of connection, learning, and community.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.

The City of Citrus Heights is continuing planning for the Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail Mariposa Extension, a proposed project that would add approximately half a mile of new trail along Arcade Creek between Sayonara Drive and Mariposa Avenue.
Community members are invited to attend an August 18 public workshop to view the proposed trail alignment, learn about features being considered, ask questions, and provide feedback directly to the project team.
Proposed improvements include a 10-foot-wide paved multi-use trail, four creek crossings, trail lighting, ADA-compliant curb ramps, drainage improvements, landscaping, and a new marked crosswalk with a Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacon at Sayonara Drive.

Single Mom Strong is a Sacramento-based nonprofit that stands beside single mothers and their children with practical support and a welcoming community. Their belief is simple and powerful: with the right tools and encouragement, families can thrive.

The kids we’ve grown with over the past 8 years are becoming teens. Continuing to nurture our community is important to us, and we also recognize that there aren’t enough safe, structured spaces for teens to connect and just be: so we’re building one.
SMS Teen, in partnership with the City of Sacramento's SacTown Youth Nights, is coming soon.
This is a natural next step in our work. We’re creating consistent, welcoming spaces for ages 12–18 with fun, learning, movement, creativity, and leadership built in, all grounded in safety and belonging.
We’ve seen what’s possible when young people have structure and trusted relationships through programs like EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare and our Men's Mentoring Team. Now we’re extending that foundation into the teen years. STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!

Program Spotlight:
Men's Mentoring Team
Single Mom Strong’s Men’s Mentoring Program creates sustained, healthy relationships between caring, positive male role models and school-aged children of single moms. Mentors are screened, trained and supported to meet regularly and consistently with mentees, for about 2.5 hours each month, throughout the school year. At these events, the children are exposed to new ideas and activities, but, most importantly, they are given an example of a man who will consistently show up for them.

Paint Your Pet!
Turn a favorite pet photo into a personalized painted portrait during a guided creative evening at The Crafted Canvas in Fair Oaks.
Paint Your Pet Night invites artists to transform a favorite photo into a colorful, personalized portrait of a beloved dog, cat, bunny, goat, bearded dragon, or another special animal. Before the event, each participant’s pet will be carefully pre-sketched onto the canvas using the submitted reference photo. The evening is presented and guided by local artist Nikki Carson.
Your prepared canvas, printed color reference, paint, and project supplies will be ready when you arrive. Participants may create a realistic portrait or experiment with playful backgrounds and imaginative colors, with painting guidance, helpful tips, and encouragement available throughout the evening.

Placerville Community Observatory Tap to expand
Visiting the Placerville Community Observatory is a great experience, especially if you're interested in astronomy and stargazing. Here’s what you can expect:
Location & Hours
The observatory is located in Placerville, California, within Moskowite Ranch Preserve near Highway 50.
They typically offer free public viewing nights on Fridays and Saturdays (weather permitting).

What You'll See
The observatory is equipped with powerful telescopes, including a 17-inch Planewave CDK telescope and solar telescopes for daytime viewing.
