Southgate Library

6132 66th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95823

Serving South Sacramento with welcoming spaces and practical resources, Southgate Library is a neighborhood hub for reading, technology access, community learning, and family-friendly programs. Itโ€™s also home to the systemโ€™s largest Vietnamese language collection, supporting one of the areaโ€™s most vibrant multilingual communities.

A Quick Bit of History

Before an official branch existed, local residents relied on a small contract station on 44th Street. South Sacramentoโ€™s first official library opened on April 1, 1952, at 6225 Franklin Boulevard with 3,000 books in a modest shared space. In 1962, it moved into the Southgate Shopping Center on Florin Road and became known as Southgate Library. With federal funding secured, the current 12,000 sq ft building opened at 6132 66th Avenue in August 1975, designed by architect Alan Oshima. Renovations in 2000 and 2011 refreshed public spaces and revitalized the childrenโ€™s areaโ€”making 2025 a proud milestone: 50 years of connection, learning, and community.

  • Sunday & Monday: Closed
  • Tuesdayโ€“Friday: 10:00 AM โ€“ 6:00 PM

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.

Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.

Free drop-in Art Lab for kids ages 6โ€“12 will be held at Fair Oaks Library, featuring hands-on STEAM activities and creative projects with all materials provided (while supplies last).

Families are invited to take part in this monthโ€™s Art Lab, a creative, drop-in experience where kids can explore a wide range of hands-on STEAM activities. Young artists will have the chance to experiment with acrylics, watercolors, felt, pipe cleaners, pom poms, and moreโ€”designing and building their own unique creations in a fun, supportive environment. Designed for children ages 6โ€“12, the program encourages curiosity, imagination, and self-expression, with all materials provided while supplies last.

Art Lab goes beyond crafting by introducing foundational STEAM concepts through play and creativity. Process-Based Art โ€” Jackson Pollock-style paint action

Jackson Pollock
1912-1956

๐ŸŽจ Process-Based Art: Create โ€ข Explore โ€ข Discover

Process-based art centers the act of making over a polished end product. It invites experimentation, play, and spontaneityโ€”letting you explore materials, techniques, and movement without a fixed outcome. The goal is the journey of creating: try, layer, react, repeat.

Key Characteristics

  • Process first โ€” outcome is secondary to exploration.
  • Freedom from rigid rules โ€” embrace happy accidents.
  • Mix & layer media โ€” paint, ink, collage, fabric, found objects.
  • Follow intuition โ€” gesture, rhythm, and movement guide the work.
  • Personal & expressive โ€” process becomes a record of thought and feeling.

Why Artists Love It

Reduces perfection pressure, builds creative confidence, and sparks original ideas through playful iteration.

Why Educators Use It

Supports multiple ages and abilities, encourages risk-taking, and builds reflection skills (what worked, what changed, whatโ€™s next).

Why Itโ€™s โ€œMessyโ€

Layering, gluing, scraping, splatteringโ€”materials in motion. The โ€œmessโ€ is part of the magic and the documentation of process.

Quick Tips

  • Start with loose marks (no erasingโ€”respond instead).
  • Layer three+ materials (e.g., watercolor + ink + collage).
  • Set a time limit to stay playful, not precious.
  • Pause, rotate, and reactโ€”let the piece tell you whatโ€™s next.

Influences & exemplars: Jackson Pollock (action painting), Eva Hesse (material/structural experimentation), Lynda Benglis (poured, textured media). Today, this approach thrives in contemporary studios, art therapy, and education.

About the Guild Theater Tap to expand
The Guild Theater

Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.

A community golf fundraiser supporting local youth programs

The 3rd Annual CH PAL Golf Tournament returns this fall for another exciting day on the course in support of youth programs and community engagement throughout Citrus Heights. After an incredible turnout last year, organizers are looking forward to making this yearโ€™s event even bigger and better for golfers, sponsors, and supporters alike.

Hosted by the Citrus Heights Police Activities League, the tournament brings together community members, local partners, and golf enthusiasts for a day that blends friendly competition, connection, and giving back. Registration details and early sign-ups will be announced later this summer, with the official registration link shared as soon as it becomes available. Last yearโ€™s tournament nearly sold out โ€” and the goal this year is to fill the course once again while continuing to support programs that make a real impact in the community.
