Classic Movie Friday is a recurring library movie series at Sylvan Oaks Library, typically held on second Fridays. The September 11 screening features The Grapes of Wrath in the Sylvan Oaks Meeting Room, with refreshments generously provided by the Friends of Sylvan Oaks Library.
Set during the Great Depression, The Grapes of Wrath follows Tom Joad and his family as they leave their Oklahoma farm and travel west toward California in search of work and a better life. Along the way, the Joads confront poverty, displacement, exploitation, and uncertainty while struggling to remain together through extraordinary hardship.
Released in 1940 and directed by John Ford, the film stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad and is adapted from John Steinbeck’s celebrated novel. The Grapes of Wrath remains a landmark of American cinema, remembered for its powerful performances, striking imagery, and enduring portrayal of family, dignity, resilience, and economic hardship.
