Mel Brooks’ 1974 comedy sends Gene Wilder into a wonderfully absurd Gothic world of mad science, mysterious castles, unforgettable characters, and affectionate parody of the classic Frankenstein films.
Classic Movie Friday is a recurring library movie series at Sylvan Oaks Library, typically held on second Fridays. The October 9 screening features Young Frankenstein in the Sylvan Oaks Meeting Room, with refreshments generously provided by the Friends of Sylvan Oaks Library.
Gene Wilder stars as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, a respected scientist determined to distance himself from his notorious family history. After inheriting his grandfather’s Transylvanian estate, however, Frederick discovers the old laboratory and is soon drawn into an increasingly ridiculous attempt to bring the dead back to life.
Released in 1974 and directed by Mel Brooks, the black-and-white comedy stars Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, and Madeline Kahn. Young Frankenstein lovingly recreates the look and atmosphere of the classic Universal monster films while turning their familiar Gothic conventions into mad science, wordplay, physical comedy, and some of the most memorable scenes in Mel Brooks’ filmography.
