Sylvan Library Adult Book Group

The Sylvan Oaks Adult Book Group meets on the second Saturday of each month for conversation about a wide range of authors, subjects, and perspectives. October’s selection is The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb.

The novel follows Ray McMillian, a talented Black classical violinist determined to build a professional career despite financial obstacles and prejudice within the classical music world. His inherited family violin is eventually discovered to be a valuable Stradivarius, transforming both his career and the stakes surrounding the instrument.

Just before Ray is scheduled to compete in the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, the violin disappears and a multimillion-dollar ransom demand follows. The mystery becomes intertwined with competing claims to the instrument, Ray’s family history, and questions about ownership, legacy, race, and opportunity.

The October discussion takes place in the Sylvan Oaks Meeting Room and is intended for adults and older adults. Readers can expect a conversation that reaches beyond the central mystery into the novel’s treatment of music, family relationships, identity, and the pressures surrounding artistic success.
