Citizen Kane

Looking for a relaxing Friday afternoon activity? The Sylvan Oaks Library invites the community to its monthly Classic Movie Matinee, held every second Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Sylvan Oaks Meeting Room. Guests can enjoy a timeless film in a welcoming setting, with refreshments generously provided by the Friends of the Sylvan Oaks Library.

This month’s feature is the legendary Citizen Kane (1941), widely regarded as one of the greatest films in cinema history. Following the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters search for the meaning behind his mysterious final word: β€œRosebud.” Directed by Orson Welles and starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Dorothy Comingore, the film runs approximately 119 minutes.

Boater Hat: From River Regatta to Runway Classic
(1870 – 1930s)

βš“ 1870s – 1880s Β· Rowing Clubs & Regattas
Born on the rivers of England and France, the stiff-brimmed straw hat kept oarsmen cool under the sun. Its flat crown made it easy to stack or stow between races. Soil Born Farms Logo
🌞 1890s · Leisurewear for the Middle Class
Adopted for summer outings, cycling, and seaside trips. Men paired it with striped blazers; women with shirtwaists and long skirts. Early Boater Hat
🎢 1900 – 1910s Β· The Icon of Respectable Youth
A mark of collegiate charm and barbershop harmony. In the U.S., β€œStraw Hat Day” celebrated its annual debut each May. Early Boater Hat
🎞️ 1920s · Cinema & City Style
The boater crowns everyone from silent-film crowds to jazz-age partygoers. Light, crisp, modern β€” a uniform for summer modernity. Early Boater Hat
πŸ‘’ 1930s Β· Gentle Fade
As felt fedoras took over, the boater lingered in uniforms, gondoliers, and nostalgic fashion β€” forever linked to early-20th-century elegance. Early Boater Hat
