Serving South Sacramento with welcoming spaces and practical resources, Southgate Library is a neighborhood hub for reading, technology access, community learning, and family-friendly programs. It’s also home to the system’s largest Vietnamese language collection, supporting one of the area’s most vibrant multilingual communities.

A Quick Bit of History

Before an official branch existed, local residents relied on a small contract station on 44th Street. South Sacramento’s first official library opened on April 1, 1952, at 6225 Franklin Boulevard with 3,000 books in a modest shared space. In 1962, it moved into the Southgate Shopping Center on Florin Road and became known as Southgate Library. With federal funding secured, the current 12,000 sq ft building opened at 6132 66th Avenue in August 1975, designed by architect Alan Oshima. Renovations in 2000 and 2011 refreshed public spaces and revitalized the children’s area—making 2025 a proud milestone: 50 years of connection, learning, and community.
