About SMS Tap to expand

Single Mom Strong

Single Mom Strong is a Sacramento-based nonprofit that stands beside single mothers and their children with practical support and a welcoming community. Their belief is simple and powerful: with the right tools and encouragement, families can thrive.

What started as a local effort has grown into a village—one that offers care for children, confidence for moms, and connection for both. Programs are designed to be accessible, respectful, and results-oriented, meeting families where they are and helping them take the next step forward.

What they provide

  • Quality early learning and childcare with the EmpowerME Preschool & Childcare, making dependable care attainable for single-income households.
  • Career advancement support—from resume coaching and mock interviews to a free Career Clothing Closet—so moms can pursue opportunity with confidence.
  • Community and belonging through empowerment workshops, “Mom & Me” outings, and supportive gatherings that reduce isolation and build durable networks.
  • Enrichment for kids—tutoring, camps, and hands-on learning partnerships—because a child’s growth is central to a family’s future.
The impact is tangible: moms feel seen and prepared; children feel safe and inspired; families gain steady footing. It’s practical help wrapped in kindness—exactly what many of our neighbors need.

The Sailor Bar

Sailor Bar Walk

Fair Oaks / Rancho Cordova (American River Parkway)

A scenic, mostly flat riverside walk through oak woodland, gravel bars, and historic gold-mining tailings—perfect for easy mileage, birding, and river views.

✨ Why visit

• Big sky river vistas, gravel bars, and seasonal side-pools.
• Frequent wildlife: egrets, herons, ducks, raptors—plus beaver & river otter sightings are possible.
• Easy access and mellow grades make it great for all levels, sunrise to golden hour.

📍 Trailhead

Sailor Bar Access, off Illinois Ave (Fair Oaks). Multiple dirt/gravel spurs along the river; your event route (~4–5 miles) stays mostly level on service roads and riverside paths.

⏱️ Time & Difficulty

Easy • Allow 1.5–2 hours with photo stops. Surfaces range from packed dirt to river rock; wear sturdy shoes.

🚗 Parking & Facilities

American River Parkway day-use fee (paid kiosk / self-pay). Sites here include restrooms, picnic spots, boat ramp (small craft), and equestrian staging areas.

👀 What to look for

  • Gravel bars & side channels—great for waterfowl and reflections.
  • Blue & valley oaks, willow/cottonwood stands along the riparian edge.
  • Fall salmon activity (often Oct–Dec) between River Bend and Sailor Bar; watch respectfully from shore.
  • Historic dredge tailings—rounded cobble mounds from early mining.

🏺 A short history of Sailor Bar

The American River has supported people for thousands of years, including Nisenan (Southern Maidu) communities along its fertile floodplain. During the Gold Rush and into the early 20th century, Sailor Bar and nearby Sacramento Bar were heavily mined—first by hand, then by massive bucket dredges. Local lore says the name comes from sailors who left their ships to try their luck here. The rounded rock “tailings” you see today are the landscape’s living record of that era.

⚠️ River safety & etiquette

  • Stay off unstable banks; river levels and currents change quickly.
  • Yield to horses & give anglers space; pack out all trash.
  • Dogs on leash where posted; watch for goathead thorns on gravel.
  • Check current county park rules and CDFW regulations if fishing.

🌤️ Best times

Year-round; spring wildflowers & green hills, summer river breezes (go early), fall color & salmon activity, crisp winter birding.

🧭 Navigation tip

From the main lot, head toward the river and follow the service road east or west along the bank; spur paths lead to gravel bars and overlooks.

Tip: River cobbles can be slick—choose treaded shoes. After big storms, expect debris and re-routed side channels.

Process-Based Art Tap to expand
Process-Based Art — Jackson Pollock-style paint action

Jackson Pollock
1912-1956

🎨 Process-Based Art: Create Explore Discover

Process-based art centers the act of making over a polished end product. It invites experimentation, play, and spontaneity—letting you explore materials, techniques, and movement without a fixed outcome. The goal is the journey of creating: try, layer, react, repeat.

Key Characteristics

  • Process first — outcome is secondary to exploration.
  • Freedom from rigid rules — embrace happy accidents.
  • Mix & layer media — paint, ink, collage, fabric, found objects.
  • Follow intuition — gesture, rhythm, and movement guide the work.
  • Personal & expressive — process becomes a record of thought and feeling.

Why Artists Love It

Reduces perfection pressure, builds creative confidence, and sparks original ideas through playful iteration.

Why Educators Use It

Supports multiple ages and abilities, encourages risk-taking, and builds reflection skills (what worked, what changed, what’s next).

Why It’s “Messy”

Layering, gluing, scraping, splattering—materials in motion. The “mess” is part of the magic and the documentation of process.

Quick Tips

  • Start with loose marks (no erasing—respond instead).
  • Layer three+ materials (e.g., watercolor + ink + collage).
  • Set a time limit to stay playful, not precious.
  • Pause, rotate, and react—let the piece tell you what’s next.

Influences & exemplars: Jackson Pollock (action painting), Eva Hesse (material/structural experimentation), Lynda Benglis (poured, textured media). Today, this approach thrives in contemporary studios, art therapy, and education.
