The history of 19th-century Ireland is often told through major events—the Act of Union, the Great Famine, and the push for land reform and Home Rule. But what about the forgotten voices of the time?

Join historian Gillian O’Brien as she explores the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland to bring to life lesser-known figures—men and women whose stories reveal surprising and powerful insights into the century that reshaped Ireland.

This online talk introduces the groundbreaking Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, a global digital humanities initiative to reconstruct Ireland’s lost national archives following the destruction of the Public Record Office in 1922.

Gillian O’Brien is Professor of Public History at Liverpool John Moores University, author of The Darkness Echoing, and a former Fulbright Scholar.

About Cars & Coffee Tap to expand
A Cars and Coffee meetup is a casual, community-driven car gathering where enthusiasts bring their vehicles to showcase, chat with fellow gearheads, and enjoy a laid-back morning. Here’s what you can expect:
1. The Atmosphere
  • It's an informal and welcoming environment where people from all walks of life come together over a shared passion for cars.
  • Most events are early morning meetups (usually on weekends, between 7-10 AM), so expect to start your day early.
  • The vibe is relaxed—this isn’t a competitive car show, just enthusiasts hanging out.
2. The Cars
  • A wide variety: expect everything from classic muscle cars and exotics to JDM tuners, off-road rigs, and even electric performance cars.
  • Some meetups are more specialized (e.g., supercar-focused, JDM-heavy, or classic-only), while others are open to all types.
  • People bring their daily drivers, project cars, and even high-end hypercars, depending on the crowd.
3. The People
  • You'll find a mix of car owners, collectors, first-time attendees, photographers, and industry professionals.
  • Most attendees are happy to talk about their cars, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.
  • Some people go just to check out the cars without bringing their own.
4. Etiquette
  • No revving, burnouts, or reckless driving. Many events are shut down due to rowdy behavior.
  • Be respectful—don’t touch cars without permission.
  • If taking photos, be mindful of owners and other attendees.
5. Extras
  • Most meetups have a coffee stand or café nearby for a morning caffeine fix.
  • Some larger events may have vendors selling car-related gear, apparel, or detailing products.
  • Occasionally, manufacturers or dealerships bring new models to showcase.
6. Leaving the Event
  • The "exit show" can sometimes be exciting, as some attendees like to give a little throttle when leaving—but remember, safety first!
  • Be mindful of traffic, pedestrians, and law enforcement that might be monitoring.
If you are attending as a spectator, you’re in for a great time! Here are some tips to make the most of your Cars and Coffee experience: 1. Arrive Early
  • The best cars tend to arrive right at the start and may leave early, so getting there when the event starts gives you the best chance to see everything.
  • Parking for spectators can fill up quickly, so plan accordingly.
2. Be Ready to Walk
  • Most meetups are in large parking lots or open spaces, so wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be walking a lot.
3. Bring a Camera or Phone
  • Car photography is a big part of the experience.
  • Be mindful of reflections in windows and other spectators when snapping pics.
  • If you want to post to social media, a lot of owners love seeing their cars get shared—just tag or credit them if possible!
4. Engage with Owners (Respectfully!)
  • If you’re interested in a particular car, most owners love talking about them—just be polite and ask before touching or peeking inside. Compliments go a long way!
5. Follow Event Etiquette
  • Stay on the sidewalks or designated areas—don’t stand too close to moving vehicles.
  • Don’t lean on or touch cars unless given permission.
  • No littering—keep the space clean so the event can continue in the future.
6. Grab Some Coffee & Enjoy the Vibes
  • Most Cars and Coffee meetups have a coffee stand or café nearby, so it’s a great chance to sip a fresh cup while enjoying the cars.
  • Some events even have local vendors selling merch, car care products, or food trucks.
7. Watch the Exits (But Be Safe!)
  • Some attendees give a little throttle when leaving, which can be fun to watch.
  • However, stay off the street and don’t encourage reckless driving—many events have been shut down due to burnouts and accidents.
Whether you're there for the cars, the community, or just to enjoy a morning out, you're in for a fun and engaging experience!

In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.

Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater.

Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.

Sailor Bar Walk — Fair Oaks / Rancho Cordova (American River Parkway)

A scenic, mostly flat riverside walk through oak woodland, gravel bars, and historic gold-mining tailings—perfect for easy mileage, birding, and river views.

✨ Why visit

• Big sky river vistas, gravel bars, and seasonal side-pools.
• Frequent wildlife: egrets, herons, ducks, raptors—plus beaver & river otter sightings are possible.
• Easy access and mellow grades make it great for all levels, sunrise to golden hour.

📍 Trailhead

Sailor Bar Access, off Illinois Ave (Fair Oaks). Multiple dirt/gravel spurs along the river; your event route (~4–5 miles) stays mostly level on service roads and riverside paths.

⏱️ Time & Difficulty

Easy • Allow 1.5–2 hours with photo stops. Surfaces range from packed dirt to river rock; wear sturdy shoes.

🚗 Parking & Facilities

American River Parkway day-use fee (paid kiosk / self-pay). Sites here include restrooms, picnic spots, boat ramp (small craft), and equestrian staging areas.

👀 What to look for

  • Gravel bars & side channels—great for waterfowl and reflections.
  • Blue & valley oaks, willow/cottonwood stands along the riparian edge.
  • Fall salmon activity (often Oct–Dec) between River Bend and Sailor Bar; watch respectfully from shore.
  • Historic dredge tailings—rounded cobble mounds from early mining.

🏺 A short history of Sailor Bar

The American River has supported people for thousands of years, including Nisenan (Southern Maidu) communities along its fertile floodplain. During the Gold Rush and into the early 20th century, Sailor Bar and nearby Sacramento Bar were heavily mined—first by hand, then by massive bucket dredges. Local lore says the name comes from sailors who left their ships to try their luck here. The rounded rock “tailings” you see today are the landscape’s living record of that era.

⚠️ River safety & etiquette

  • Stay off unstable banks; river levels and currents change quickly.
  • Yield to horses & give anglers space; pack out all trash.
  • Dogs on leash where posted; watch for goathead thorns on gravel.
  • Check current county park rules and CDFW regulations if fishing.

🌤️ Best times

Year-round; spring wildflowers & green hills, summer river breezes (go early), fall color & salmon activity, crisp winter birding.

🧭 Navigation tip

From the main lot, head toward the river and follow the service road east or west along the bank; spur paths lead to gravel bars and overlooks.

Tip: River cobbles can be slick—choose treaded shoes. After big storms, expect debris and re-routed side channels.
