This vibrant reimagining of The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy Gale, a young teacher from Harlem who is magically transported to the dazzling, urban-fantasy Land of Oz. Along her journey to find the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends unforgettable companions—a Scarecrow searching for wisdom, a Tin Man longing for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion in need of courage. The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento's historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.
Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.
