An at-your-own-pace exploration highlighting the contributions of Black Californians
The California Museum’s Self-Guided Black History Tour offers a thoughtful, self-paced way to explore the stories that have shaped California’s past and present. Centered on themes of resilience, activism, democracy, and community, the tour weaves through the Museum’s signature and temporary exhibits to highlight the enduring contributions of Black Californians.
Along the route, visitors encounter trailblazing individuals, influential movements, and community-building organizations, with stories featuring figures such as RuPaul Andre Charles, Betty Reid Soskin, Serena Williams, and others whose impact reaches far beyond the state. Map markers guide participants to focal points within each exhibit, while read, watch, and listen icons highlight opportunities to engage with stories through text, audio, and video.
Designed for visitors of all ages, the tour encourages exploration at your own pace. Participants can pick up a printed map at the Museum Store or download the digital tour map before or during their visit. Tickets may be purchased in advance or upon arrival during regular Museum hours, with last admission at 4:00 pm.
